Halophore Featured in AAU/APLU 2020 University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Showcase

Halophore has been selected as one of 22 startups highlighted in the 2020’s University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Showcase organized by the American Association of Universities (AAU) and the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities (APLU). The showcase is meant to highlight startups that have their roots in federally-funded research at some of the nation’s leading academic institutions. The event is also a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Bayh-Dole act (a piece of legislation that created the university research-to-startup pipeline) and underscores the importance of federally-funded research in supporting American innovation.

As a company that emerged from university-based research and is currently supported by federal seed funding, we can absolutely attest to this. American universities are research powerhouses because of federal support, and are vitally important to building new, high-tech ventures and training the workforce to staff them.

This event also underscores the emphasis placed on entrepreneurship by Indiana University and President McRobbie. Our team has benefitted from a variety of human and institutional resources at IU as we spun out - it takes an effort of many hands.

You can follow the social media campaign with the hashtag #Research2Startup to see more of Halophore and other selected startups, and check out our short video featuring co-founders Chris Benson and Amar Flood discussing SMILES technology and its future. (Special thanks to the Research Communications team at the IU Office of the Vice President for Research for their work there).
